Truth-Ish

Trump gave an interview to ABC this week, and you better believe I’m going to latch onto the tiniest fragment of it, because it is the embodiment why he is the absolute worst. “I always try to be truthful,” he said. He expanded very little on this statement, and it is a thing that literally made me shout at my computer screen. Because it’s the ultimate lie. It is the lie at the very essence of Donald Trump. Because Donald Trump is a liar. He lies regularly and blatantly. And it’s important to point out that I’m not just talking about things where he could be credibly accused of being dumb or just not knowing all the facts. Donald Trump isn’t just untruthful. HE LIES. To lie requires an intent to deceive, and he lies are the cornerstone of his presidency. He lied when he said he intended to “Drain the swamp”. We know this because he not only didn’t kick out the people in Washington that he claimed were the problem, he brought more in. The exact same, rich, entitled, classist Wall Street scumbags that he claimed he had no interest in serving. He lies about his intentions, the intentions of his opponents, the consequences of his policies, how the world views him and his actions. And the frustrating thing isn’t even that he does it, it’s that there are still an uncomfortable number of people that still believe him. History will not look kindly back at this point in history. It will be asked how someone like him rose to power, how anyone could have believed his lies, and there won’t be a good answer.
Open Source

Donald Trump is so dedicated to exposing the media as shifty liars, that he’s started attacking his own sources to discredit them. When the White House released information from an anonymous source regarding the now cancelled summit with Kim Jon Un in Singapore, the New York Time reported it. Donald Trump then decided to call out the New York Times for using a fake source…even though it was provided by his people OFFICIALLY. It’s bizarre, and goes to show that Trump isn’t even bothering to understand the context of the words he’s saying before he evens says them. He’s just lying to lie.
Unsubstantiated

Donald Trump seems very concerned about a spy that was in his campaign. He is spending a great deal of time ranting and raving about it, and trying to push for an investigation into the claim. But the problem is that so far, he’s unable to produce any evidence of the claim. Sure we know that the FBI may have asked an informant to question some people in the campaign regarding the Russia matters, but if that’s what he means by a spy, then anyone who ever asked someone to ask another person a question is also a spy. It’s apples and oranges. I mean, I would perhaps give the benefit of the doubt that maybe there is more to this than meets the eye, if during the secretive meeting regarding this that several congressional leaders attended, one of them came out and said they thought the President was on to something, but even the people who are supposed to be on Trump’s side seem to think Trump is off his rocker on this. Either he’s crazy, or he’s trying to further divide people by creating a fake conspiracy, but who would do that, right?
A Liar’s Paradox

Lesley Stahl is a veteran correspondent for the stalwart and dependable news hour “60 Minutes”. It’s hard to argue the trustworthiness of 60 Minutes and their retinue, because they’ve been so reliable in their integrity for like half a century. So when Ms. Stahl told people at a press awards dinner that Trump personally told her that he bashes the Press for the sole purpose of keeping people from believing the bad press about him, I’m pretty inclined to believe her. But she finds herself in a bit of a catch-22 with this story. If you believe Trump, she’s just another lying journalist lying about making them seem like liars. It’s paradoxical at it’s best, and it’s emblematic of the state of the first estate. Is this what the “post-truth” era looks like?
Poaching Talent

Weirdly, one of the first public acknowledgements Trump has made about the whole Stormy Daniels affair, to my knowledge, was to call her a liar over the sketch of the guy Daniels says threatened her. And honestly, Trump should have probably decided not to weigh in on this one, because Michael Avenatti is proving to be the Anti-Trump, using Trump’s favorite tactics to combat him. In this case, Avenatti jumped on Trump’s tweet to suggest that what he said was tantamount to defamation, and it would totally make sense to come after him for that. Trump has to feel weird for once being on the receiving end of that threat.
