The Beautiful People

Beautiful people1

Trump’s little weekend diatribes are beginning to be like a tradition.  You can usually count on him to say something completely crazy before the weeks is out, whether he’s laying an extra layer of crazy on top of a crazy week, or on the off chance he managed to have a quiet week, he can sneak it a little crazy to make sure the week feels right.  This week wasn’t too terribly off script.  Lot’s of stuff about witch hunts, and him patting his back. He really wants us to know that it’s unfair that everyone is focused on his potential treason when he wants to take credit for questionable unemployment statistics. But the weird thing that really caught my eye was when he suggested all the “Young and Beautiful” peoples’ lives being destroyed over the investigation.  To which I and any reasonable person would ask…which young and beautiful people are having their lives even affected over this investigation, much less devastated and destroyed? I’ve been racking my brain over this for hours, and I can’t think of who he might be referring to.  That is unless he for some reason thinks his is the young and beautiful life being devastated. But that would be crazy, right?

Counter Sue

Counter Suit1

So the DNC is launching a big new lawsuit against Russia, Trump’s campaign and WikiLeaks.  It’s a great big mess of a lawsuit, and frankly, I have to wonder what will actually be uncovered through this, though they seem to have a sympathetic judge in their corner, a judge who has history prosecuting the whole Watergate debacle oh so long ago.  Trump’s grand plan to deal with this situation?  Counter sue! Of course.  It’s like his kneejerk reaction.  Though the stuff he claims he wants to uncover…doesn’t make sense.  Like the server he claims the DNC refused to give to the FBI, which is nonsense, because the DNC didn’t refuse cooperation with the Feds. The whole thing is weird.  But for me and my money, my question is….who does he expect to litigate this case for him?  Again, the dude can’t find a lawyer, and for a case that’s even less likely to yield a positive outcome, I can’t imagine he’ll have a ton of lawyers chomping at the bit.

Thrown Under the Bus

changing mind1

I’ll give Trump this: he’s certainly good at keeping people guessing what he’s really thinking.  One second, you are just certain he’s sitting in Putin’s pocket, the next he’s throwing around tough boy talk and shooting missiles and imposing more strenuous sanctions, then the next day he’s saying “naw, just kidding, no sanctions.”  If I was more conspiracy theory minded, I feel like I could connect some dots here, but I’m not, and I won’t.  But I’m certainly feeling the whiplash from his flip flops.

The Wrong Side of History

Pot and Kettle1

Mike Pence called out Russia for being on the wrong side of history on Sunday, in regards to Syria.  And you know, that’s probably true.  History will not look favorably on Russia for supporting Assad’s regime.  But let’s be fair, Pence is on the wrong side of history about basically everything in his own right.  He supports insane legislation against the LGBTQ community, and is personally offended by gay marriage, and he supports the more insane of Trump’s policies, including a big, useless wall across the Mexican border.  He fully supports the tax bill that railroads the vast majority of Americans, and  in general, holds mean spirited views on anyone who doesn’t view the world through his very narrow lens.  Calling someone out on being on the wrong side of history feels, if not ironic, then entirely hypocritical.

The Trump Testimony

Testimony1

There is something inherently humorous and infantile about how Trump’s lawyers are treating the prospect of Trump talking to Mueller.  On one level, I kind of understand.  No lawyer wants their client talking to law enforcement.  On the other hand, the President gets a lot of legal leeway in what he’s allowed to get prosecuted for, and from a purely public point of view, you have to wonder what his legal council is trying to keep Trump from saying.  Trump is even bringing on a new lawyer to help (after he condemned the New York Times for reporting that and claiming he wasn’t).  And their tactics to limit Mueller’s access to Trump have been weird…This week, they’re presenting “documents” to Mueller’s team, essentially a narrative that they pinky promise is the total and complete truth and is totally, completely as useful as Trump’s own testimony.

The Real Russian Collusion

So the Republicans and Right Wing Media outlets are really trying to push this narrative that the Russians colluded with the Democrats.  That THAT is the real story and not potential collusion with Trump. I mean they make a good point.  I mean, only by working with the Russians could they have tanked the 2016 elections so hard.  It’s a damn goofy claim that flies in the face evidence and…you know, reality?  I mean, I’m willing to take the word of right-wing armchair philosophers over a vast network of non-partisan intelligence gatherers whose job and expertise involve this very thing.

Nobody in the White House Talks about Clinton

Nobody Talks about Clinton1

Kellyanne Conway told Chris Cuomo on CNN that nobody talks about Hillary Clinton in the White House. “We don’t care about her. Nobody here talks about her.”  That seems to be empirically untrue, as literally right after she gave the interview, good ol’ King Don sent out a tweet about her.  It seems like SOMEONE pretty significant in the White House cares about her and talks about her.
