Crazy Politics

You might be forgiven for thinking the big Conservative Union CPAC conference that took place over the weekend was actually an art installation that was mean to be satire rather than an actual political convention where actual ideas were discussed.  Mostly because it featured a bunch of hyper conservative politicians go on schizophrenic and delusional rants that discuss, mostly how crazy the democrats have become.  Ted Cruz actually used the term “bat crap crazy”, meanwhile Donald Trump is busy groping the stars and stripes and talking about how all the stuff he’s getting done but not really.  It was weird.  If this convention was supposed to mobilize Republican donors and really engage confidence for 2020, I don’t know how successful it was.  Because while most the people there might be ideologically misguided, I don’t think most of them are deaf and blind to how the perception of the Republican party has shifted, especially since the midterms.

Lessons in Sensitivity

Donald Trump tried to take Representative Ilhan Omar for criticizing Israel, joining the bandwagon in calling her remarks Anti-Semitic.  Now I’m not hear to judge her statements.  That’s a can of worms I’ll let other folks debate.  But for Donald Trump to criticize a public official for being prejudice and making insensitive statements, especially calling on them to resign…that’s bound to fall on some deaf ears. Especially when he couldn’t go 24 hours without calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” again, and making a crude joke comparing a presidential campaign and the genocide of indigenous peoples.  No, he doesn’t have much clout in the sensitivity department, I’m afraid.

Self Evident

Happy Independence Day, Dear Readers!  For those who visit the site and read me on the daily, Thank you for your support and kind words!  You guys keep my spirits up when politics of the day can have me kind of dark.

Now, on to our main story!

Donald Trump’s penchant for reversing positions and pretending he’s always had that position is well documented.  By me in fact.  I’ve lost count out of how many times I’ve used his blatant hypocrisy as material for gags.  But to give our dear President some sense of credit, he usually reverses positions after some time has passed, and a certain amount of digging has to be done to catch it.  Not much digging as he likes to say things multiple times and in CAPS lock, but digging none the less. So it was kind of surprising to watch him do go from one end of a spectrum to the complete other end in a matter of days.  Again, done in all caps.  “HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON’T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE. PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS & SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME.  WIN!” Trump tweeted on the 27th.  Three days later, after Goodlatte went down in the flamiest of flames, He again went to Twitter only to say “I never pushed the Republicans in the House to vote for the Immigration Bill, either GOODLATTE 1 or 2, because it could never have gotten enough Democrats as long as there is the 60 vote threshold. I released many prior to the vote knowing we need more Republicans to win in Nov.”  Seriously.  Three days.  Now, in the past, when these hypocrisies have been pointed out, Trump apologists shout about context, but those two tweets are in their entirety.  To say that he’s being misrepresented or quoted out of context holds no weight.  It’s the barest example I’ve ever seen on it’s face of shameless hypocrisy.  It’s really quite stunning to see.

Food Assistance

Healthy Eating1

So, Trump wants to give people food boxes instead of food stamps.  Beyond the logistical nightmare of implementing this idea, it is shortsighted in a number of ways, presupposing that everyone who receives these benefits have the luxury of working kitchens and taking away the element of choice.  Though the argument against choice is the healthier options the program would be handing out, as opposed to the more economically minded people who forgo healthier items for stretching their dollars out and getting the most use out of the money they have.  But at the end of the day, isn’t it a little absurd that Donald Trump is attempting to regulate the healthiness of anyone’s meals?
